The Art of Playing in the Rain

August 17, 2020

Last week, the Wiregrass was doused with some pretty strong thunderstorms.  On one of these days, I decided to bring back some old school fun with my family.  As messy as it was, we had so much fun!

After running errands all morning, and it raining all afternoon, my son was done with being inside.  He's the kind of kid who would prefer to be outside 7+ hours a day.  After lots of creative thinking, I had run out of ways to entertain him.  When the thunder stopped and the rain slowed down to a drizzle, we put on our rain boots, raincoats, and headed outside.

Of course, he found the biggest, muddiest puddle our backyard could offer, and boy did he have a ball!  It made the afternoon even better when his daddy got home from work, put on old clothes, and joined us.  Now, usually I am not one to get dirty, let alone roll around in the mud, but the joy on my son's face was well worth the extra laundry and dirty bathtub.  It was so nice to stop and enjoy the magic of a simple childhood pleasure again. Bonus- it also left one tired boy ready for bed!

So next time when it rains, grab the family, put on your rain gear, and create some fun childhood memories for your kids while revisiting some of your own.
