K-2nd Grade Classes
Fun with Stories
Teachers: Karey Ward

Loosely following the classic Five in a Row program we will be reading greatly loved literature
classics and then have a “mini-lesson” after each book. Books chosen would be from the Before
Five in a Row, all Five in a Row volume, and Sonlight early elementary level readers and
read-aloud.
We will read around 3 stories a class and will try to re-visit the ‘favorites’ throughout the year to
help instill a love for these classics. Our “mini lesson” may include acting out the story(ies) we
just read, making a snack or crafft to reinforce our story, simply discussing our favorite parts,
drawing pictures about the story, or even making notebook pages (age appropriate of course).
*Fee: A list of supplies will be posted that moms can donate to help with crafts, snacks, etc...to
cover class expenses rather than charge a fee.

Looking at Art

Using the series “Come Look With Me” by Gladys Blizzard and “How Artists See” by Colleen
Carrell we will explore great works of art from thousands of years ago to modern day. Children
will be encouraged to use observation and discover subtle beauty, mood, and elements in the
paintings as well as learn about the artists who created the works. Our goal will be to create
Art/Artist Notebook Pages about what we learn (age appropriate of course…. Works will be
adjusted to students ability...drawing, writing, or simply dictating their thoughts). Towards the
end of the school year (2nd semester) students will explore the 7 elements of Art with simple
lessons and create some pieces of our own.
NOTE: We will not be observing, discussing, etc…. Any pieces containing nudity.
*Fee: A list of supplies moms can bring in to cover our needs will be posted rather than charge a
fee. For ex: a bag of cotton balls, a pack of copy paper, a stack of construction paper, glue
sticks, etc.

Wacky Science Teacher: Stacy Bogart
Grades: 3rd-7th
Time: 9:00-10:00 Fee: $120, can be split
We will be learning the Scientific Method and using it each week as we study different science subjects and do experiments. Each student will receive their own Safety Goggles, Science Journal and a folder. They need to bring these as well as an oversized shirt to use as a lab coat, to class each week. For their safety, the students will NOT be able to do the experiment if they don’t have their Safety Goggles. The Science Journal is where we will be documenting our findings on our experiments each week. I will be giving Vocabulary Words for homework each week for the next week’s class so you will need to schedule time in your weekly school week for this class. These words will be used while learning about our Science Experiments each week, so it’s important that your child complete these words before coming to class. You will see a space in the journal for them to write their Vocabulary words and the definitions. Please help your child look up these words and find the simple meanings or the meaning that is on your child’s level. (Since we have 3rd-7th graders in this class each student’s level will vary). Merriam-Webster's Learner's Dictionary online is a good source for the definitions. I will be giving grades on Class Participation, Vocabulary Words and Journal Documenting of the experiments. Students will explore the amazing territory that is inside the bag they live in that is called skin. Through experiments to try, tests to take, and tools to make that will help you see, feel and hear what is going on inside we will make amazing discoveries!

World Geography *
Teacher: Stacy Bogart
Grades: 3rd-7th
Time: 10:00-11:00 Fee: $10
One of the best ways to learn is to become a teacher. In this learning opportunity, the kids
have the chance to become the teacher with a focus on research and presentation. The goal
is to formulate the ideas and articulate them clearly, as well as developing good listening and
discussion skills. Please Note; the presentations will be done as homework before each class
so you will need to schedule time into your weekly school schedule.
The first part of the year we will focus on the USA. The students will choose from the list of
states and will present on that state. After we have completed all 50 states and the 5 major US
territories, we will turn our focus to the rest of the world. Each country is divided into topics with
each student researching and reporting on one topic. Assignments will be given out at the first
class.
All reports will include an oral presentation, a visual presentation and a hand out for each of
their classmates to put in their notebook.
· The oral presentation should be no longer than 5 minutes.
· The visual presentation can be anything that pertains to their subject, such as a Lego model
of a famous inventors electric engine, a model of the Eiffel tower out of marshmallows and
spaghetti or a piece of the Great Wall of China made out of sugar cubes, a craft or game that
the kids of the country enjoy and the kids favorite subject, a food sample made from a recipe
from the country. The possibilities are endless and I want the kids to use their imagination and
think outside of the box.
· The take-home item can be anything such as a copy of your report, a chart, a CD that has
music from a country, the country flag to color, maps, timeline, a craft, recipe or pictures that
you used for your visual presentation- that choice is up to the student and the choices are only
limited by their imagination.
As you can see, in order for the class to work and the kids to get a full understanding of each
country, it’s very important for each child to do their part. I will be stressing the importance of
teamwork so they know that each presentation subject is important and without it their fellow
students will have holes in their knowledge about the country.
We will be participating in the Geography fair in the spring so each child will pick a country and
can use the information they have collected in class for their Geography board.
If you were in the class last year, please know that with 249 countries on this great planet, we
will not be repeating any of the ones we studied last year.
I will be giving grades this year. Grades will be based on the three subjects above as well as
class participation.

Junior Master Gardeners*

“Learn, Grow, Eat, & Go!” is a science-based program to learn about plants~why they are
important to us, how to grow a garden, and how to give plants what they need. While learning
how to provide for plants needs, the students will also learn how plants provide for our needs.
The lessons will use math, science, language arts, geography, history, health and social studies
concepts to help the students understand how plants help us live, grow, learn and play. We
need to have at least 6 students for this class to happen.

Basic Kitchen Skills

Students will learn how to basic kitchen skills like cooking eggs, identifying and chopping
vegetables, making dough for noodles, etc. Students will leave the class with a basic
understanding of kitchen tools and their purposes.

Acting (Beginner)*

To give students a core understanding in how both fun and challenging acting can be. The class
will focus on promoting self confidence and various acting techniques. Students will go over
improv, monologues, auditions and scene work.

Spanish 2*

Grades: 9th-12th
Time: 9:00-10:00 Fee: $30
Prerequisite: Spanish 1 or its equivalent.
Using the same Bob Jones Spanish textbook as level1, this high-school level course will build
upon level 1 and will continue to develop reading, writing, and oral skills. The teacher will speak
in Spanish for the majority of the class time, and students will be required to do the same during
class time. Students will be expected to complete at least 4 hours of homework per week,
including correcting their own homework. Students will also meet on Thursdays for an online
class. Online classes last approximately one hour. When class requirements are met, the
student will earn one credit of high school foreign language.
Parents will be required to attend an information meeting. More information will follow during the
months prior to the start of class.
A minimum of 6 students must be enrolled for this class to be held.

Beginner Sewing

Students will learn to sew seams, maintain seam allowances, cut, iron and learn basic sewing
construction details. I am open to teaching whatever students would like to make. I typically
make dresses for myself and my daughter, but I have made several bags, quilts and rag dolls.
On the first day of co-op we can discuss what project they would like to start with and that will
determine the necessary supplies.

Biology with Labs*

Grade: High School
Time: 10:00-12:00 Fee: $25 plus book
Biology w/lab is a High School course that requires General Science as a prerequisite. We will
be using Apologia Biology 2nd edition. Your student will need the textbook and student
notebook for class. Students will be required to write lab reports after each lab. We will have
a review before each module test. This class will introduce students to a college lab. For
dissections, we will be going to Troy University to use their lab facilities. Parents will be
responsible for transportation to Troy during the weeks we will be going.

Basic life skills seems to have been all but forgotten. In this class we will learn how to
host guests, basic automobile maintenance, budgeting, basic home maintenance,
taxes, about voting, laundry and many more things.

Modern American History *

Ask your teenager what they know about American history past the Civil War. What did
they tell you? Can they tell you what World War 1 was about? What happened in
America from the ’20s? In the ’70s? Can they tell you ANYTHING? In my years dealing
with teenagers, I've found there's a gap in learning past the industrial revolution and
that's what this class is here to fill. Using different resources such as letters from
soldiers, passionate speeches written by great Americans, and interviews from
survivors will help to ignite a fire in your student that will not be soon forgotten.
!!!Please note that this is a timeframe that includes graphic situations such as war, the
20’s, etc. Possible reading assignments, movies or class discussions may be
uncomfortable with sensitive kids.!!!

stories.

Yearbook

Students in the Yearbook class are the leaders and decision-makers of the yearbook. In
Yearbook class students will complete the myriad of tasks to create a quality yearbook that
reflects the pictorial history of the activities for the present school year.
The following list is extensive, however, probably not inclusive. ·
Develop a theme
· Design cover, end sheets and title page that reflect the theme
· Create master designs for each section
· Determine story ideas
· Determine photo ideas
· Set up story and photo assignments: “shoot to the shot”
· Organize the sale and distribution of the book
· Finalize completed computer pages
· Establish and meet publication deadlines
· Edit pages
The yearbook will meet the first Friday of each month from 12:30-1:30. Bring a lunch to enjoy from
12:00-12:30. As the time for production becomes closer it will be necessary to meet more often.
